Plastic

Plastic is probably at your fingertips all day long every single day. Plastic keyboard, plastic cups, plastic phones; the list is endless. Plastic is an inescapable epidemic. Unfortunately, so is plastic pollution. Quite a bit of the plastic we produce and use ends up in landfills. The rest make their way into our water bodies. We have produced more plastic in the last decade than we have in the last century. Today, there is enough plastic thrown away to circle the earth four times and we currently recover only 5% of the total plastic we produce. Every square mile of the ocean has about 46,000 pieces of plastic in it. Plastic pollution adversely affects all organisms on earth, right from humans to wildlife and the natural environment, right from causing some serious diseases in humans to being responsible for wiping out certain animal species. In fact, plastic and its pollution today pose a bigger threat to our existence than nuclear war and weapons. Scary, isn’t it?

Fortunately, small steps that we take towards lessening plastic pollution are hugely beneficial to the environment in the long run. On the whole, recycling efforts form a majority of the solutions to tackling the problem of plastic pollution. Efforts to implement good civic practices are great solutions that we, as a community and a country, can undertake to effectively reduce plastic pollution. But how exactly do we go about understanding how much we, as individuals, are contributing to this problem on a micro level and how can we tackle it?
